| The typical aromas of Faugeres wines are "gun-flint" (mineral note) , "garrigue" (thyme, juniper), small red summer fruits, liquorice, pepper. 90% of the Cinsault grapes grown in the Faugeres appellation are used to make rose wines. This variety adds finesse and the floral aromas. Grenache and Syrah are also used to complete the production of rose. Grenache imparts roundness to the wine. Syrah, which usually makes up 5 to 10% of the grapes, imparts hints of fruit and a lovely consistent colour. Grenache provides a strong alcoholic content, along with hints of fruit and spices. Carignan is vinified either removed from the stalk or by carbonic maceration in order to audid the slightly sharper tannins contained in the stalk. Carignan acts as an excellent base when harvested at low levels of yield and can often give astonishing results. It is the traditional variety in the Faugeres appellation. The aromatic range provided by Syrah is rather floral (violets), sometimes with a hint of over-ripe red summer fruits. Syrah also imparts the subtle and delicate tannins. Mourvedre is reputed for its high-quality tannins which guarantee a long life for the wine. It can often impart an animal (leather) characteristic to the wine. |
