CURRENT GRAPE VARIETIES

The "Faugeres" charter requires that the following grape varieties be used:
CARIGNAN 40 % max
CINSAULT 20 % max
GRENACHE 20 % min
SYRAH or
MOURVEDRE
15 % with at least 5 % Mourvedre
For the 1998 production, Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre must make up at least 40% of the grape varieties present.
Ils devront représenter 50% en 2005.
In 2005, this wil rise to 50%.

The proportions of Carignan and Cinsault are decreasing. Proportions of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre are rising constantly (in 1997, they represented 50% of the grape varieties used).
Currently, the grape varieties are being cultivated in as follows :
CARIGNAN 600 Ha 30 %
CINSAULT 240 Ha 12 %
GRENACHE 560 Ha 28 %
MOURVEDRE 200 Ha 10 %
SYRAH 400 Ha 20 %
TOTAL : 2000 Ha 100 %

Certain traditional grape varieties, such as Cinsault and Carignan (especially the older vines) are capable of producing much better wines in the Faugeres region than on other types of soil....

Under good production conditions (low yield, good crop health, etc.), particularly on high schistous slopes where the soil is thin and dry, these often- denigrated grape varieties can produce exceptional and astonishing wines.
